I recently had the pleasure of interviewing, LaTeefah Nation, affectionally known as Teefah at Iman Park BarTaco. Chef Teefah came in with a smile and a hug. She’s truly a joy to be around. As we munched on our guacamole and tacos, we covered a whole plethora of things especially food.
Why not food? It has always been something that I’ve been attracted to. Since I was knee high to a grasshopper, coming from a large family I have always been surrounded by food. I started out being a helper in my mom’s kitchen. It went from me helping to making cheesecake batter and measuring out ingredients, to watching the cake, to I need you to make this.
What’s most challenging about what you do?
I can sum it up in two words. Staying sane. If you’re not careful, working in the culinary world can wreak havoc on one’s mental & spiritual health. I meditate both in the morning and at night while having mini-meditations throughout the day if necessary. Another would be my work hours. I’ve worked 3a-11a, 12a-8a, and 4a-12a. It can cause issues when it comes to dating.
What mistake has given you your biggest lesson?
When I finally had my first paying kitchen job. Yes, I did work for free for a while to gain experience, so I was excited to finally get a paycheck. I had an image of what I should be doing with the salary attached. Let’s just say focusing on others, what they were doing, their paycheck was ultimately my downfall. I was so concerned about what others were doing and forgot to run my own race and stay in my own lane.
What word of advice would you give someone just getting into the field?
You want to do this for the love of it, the passion to cook and create. If you are doing this for the money, this is not the field for you. On the Food Network, they don’t tell you that. Nor do they tell you about the arguments that one may have in the kitchen with some of the other chefs or the third degree burns you may receive. You may get discouraged, but if you have the passion and the love for what you do then you will keep going.
What do you find most enjoyable about what you do?
Seeing people smile. We can wake up and die a couple of hours later. There is enough turmoil going on in the world today, why would you want to contribute?
What’s your favorite food?
I’m simple, sautéed vegetables lol
Any food you are not quite fond of?
This may come as a shocker but I don’t care for sweets. I enjoy making desserts and sweet treats for others, but I would rather eat fruits & veggies.
Fav Food Memory?
When my sister and I visited UAE. I fell in love with Middle Eastern food on the spot! I liked it before I traveled there, but having the opportunity to experience the culture was great. I’ve been roaming the streets of Atlanta for the best hummus, zaatar, and falafels since I got back.
How do you avoid being complacent?
By trying new things. I’ve seen many employees become complacent and eventually stagnant because they were afraid to step outside the box. I’m the exact opposite. Don’t get me wrong, anytime I try something new I get nervous like most. There’s no better feeling than being outside your comfort zone. Your life is on the other side of your comfort zone, so go get it!
Who do you admire personally? Professionally?
Oprah!!!! But I don’t just have one person. There are billions and billions of people on this Earth that I could learn from. However, professionally I can say that Antonio Bachour. I just love him. I saw a picture of something that he’s done and it’s like fashion for desserts. His food looks so fashionable, so feminine.
How do you keep coming up with content for your brand?
I’m constantly seeking inspiration from all creative avenues. From watching a movie to going to the museum. I also write down any and all ideas that pop into my mind. My notebook looks like a dog has been playing with it, but I don’t care. It keeps my mind fresh.
What other services do you offer?
With my website, you will be able to order gourmet sweet treats like cookies, Rice Krispy treats, chocolate covered Oreos, and more. I will also add sweets for those that are vegan and gluten free. I also cater desserts for small intimate parties.
What are you working on now?
Right now I am working on the last tweaks for my online store FrostedBeauty.com. I will have it up and running the first part of July.
