When you think of the month of February what do you usually think of? I usually think of teddy bears, chocolates, and roses. I know my heart health is the last thing I'm thinking of. Well given the research I've done it's time to change that and I'm here to change it for you as well.
February is American Heart Month. It is encouraged during this month to educate ourselves on heart disease and to cultivate a healthier lifestyle. According to the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death(1 in 4 deaths a year). It can affect people of all ages, genders and races but the most affected are African Americans.
Even though there are some factors that are hereditary, prevention is still possible. Doctors agree that there are several ways to lessen your risk :
- Talk to your doctor about your risk of heart disease and together you can create a game plan.
- Exercise- do some type of exercise for 30 minutes at least 3 times a week
- Improve your eating habits- eat more heart healthy meals that minimize your salt intake
Fighting heart disease is entirely possible with the right knowledge and taking the proper steps to make the best lifestyle changes for you.
